(Dr. Nohesara)
This course examines classical and contemporary theories of Hysteria and Obsession. Psychoanalysis began with Freud’s investigations into the structure of Hysteria and Obsessive–Compulsive Neurosis. He tried to explain such psychopathological conditions in terms of seduction and dynamic tension between the conscious and unconscious. Freud’s approach was a major break from the work of Charcot and Janet. Whereas for Charcot, a “degenerate nervous system” was seen as a precondition to hysteria, Freud viewed hysterical illness as more purely psychical. This line of thinking led to developing ideas such as defense, repression, the unconscious, a dynamic mind, the value of working through (over forgetting), and analysis (over suggestion). However, psychoanalysis has changed since Freud, and today a number of other psychoanalytic theories guide our clinical thinking and practice.
