Until recently, theories of perversion have limited their scope of inquiry to sexual behavior and personal trauma. Freud defined perversion as any form of sexual behavior which deviates from the norm of heterosexual genital intercourse. Lacan described perversion not as a form of behavior but as a clinical structure. The distinction between perverse acts and the perverse structure easily extends to social and political domains. This course will discuss the psychoanalytic, social, and political dimensions of perversion.
